Sample Numbers command (View menu and Toolbar) Show Sample Numbers toolbar icon

Select this to toggle between the display of sample numbers or seam and ply information in the annotation area to the left of each borehole.

The visibility of sample numbers changes the behaviour of Correlate Mode. When sample numbers are showing the Correlate mode edits sample numbers, otherwise seams and plies are edited.

A checkbox is shown next to this command (or the toolbar button is shown selected) when sample numbers are being shown.
